Although many women are thriving in IT jobs, many others do not understand what IT really entails.
That is the view of the British Computer Society (BCS), which has suggested that women often think of IT in a negative manner.
This is especially the case for younger women and girls in school, as the image of the industry is not portrayed well enough.
Rebecca George, chair of the BCS Women's Forum, commented: "A lot of women don't know what working in IT really means and don't realise that they are using IT in their home everyday.
"There are a number of reasons for this and one of these is to do with the image of the industry, particularly for girls at school who don't get a very good introduction to IT".
According to e-skills UK figures, women in IT earn five hundred pounds per week on average.
